TROY, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team split a pair of duals at the Journeyman Classic on Saturday, cruising to victory over LIU, 37-3, while falling to 24th-ranked Purdue, 32-8.
After dropping the opening bout against LIU, the Bulls rattled off nine straight wins to easily put away the Sharks.
Derek Spann wasted little time getting the Bulls on the board as he earned a technical fall over Michael Blando just 2:43 into the match, to put UB ahead to stay, 5-3. John Arceri and Kevin Meloni followed with decisions at 141 and 149, respectively, to extend the UB lead to 11-3.
The Bulls turned up the heat beginning at the 157 match. Hunter Shaut earned the first win of his career with an 8-0 major decision over Dominick Demarco. Troy Keller followed with a tech fall over Nick Provenzano to put the Bulls ahead, 19-3.
Jake Lanning got UB's first pin of the season when he pinned Mike Parrish just 1:41 into his match. Pete Acciardi and Sam Schuyler followed with major decisions at 184 and 197, respectively.
Will Leonard closed out the dual with a 6-0 decision over Tim Nagosky. It was Leonard's first career victory.
Earlier in the day, the Bulls dropped a dual to a very good Purdue squad.
The Bulls did have a couple highlights in the dual. Spann won by tech fall over Marshall Craig at 133. Keller earned a decision over Emil Soehnlen at 165.
"It was a good weekend," head coach John Stutzman said. "We are battling hard with a lot of new faces in the lineup. They are learning and starting to believe in themselves. Over the last week as a program we have competed against some of the best teams in the country. We as a staff are excited to get back in the room and keep progressing."
Next up for the Bulls is a dual at Cal State Bakersfield on November 22.
