BAKERSFIELD, CA - Cal State Bakersfield rallied to defeat Buffalo, 16-15, at the Iacardo Center on Friday night. The Bulls led 15-9 heading into the final two matches of the night, but the Roadrunners were able to win the final two matches, including one by major decision, to eke out the one-point victory.
"It's not what we wanted, but we had some great performances," head coach John Stutzman said. "We have to regroup and move forward."
The Bulls got off to a great start, winning three of the first four matches. Starting at 165, Troy Keller got the first points for Buffalo. He was in control the whole match before securing the 6-2 decision over Jacob Thalin to improve to 3-1 in duals on the season.
Jake Lanning was up next and outlasted Albert Urias, 7-6, in the 174-pound bout. Lanning notched a takedown in every period to win his second straight dual.
After the Roadrunners cut the lead to 6-3, Sam Schuyler won a tough matchup at 197 lbs. The redshirt-sophomore used a third-period escape to defeat Dom Duchame, a National Qualifier, 4-3.
The Bulls dropped the 285 and 125 bouts allowing Cal State Bakersfield to tie the dual at 9-9. However, Derek Spann continued his strong season by earning a 9-2 decision over nationally-ranked Chance Rich at 133. Spann had three takedowns in the match to improve to 3-1 in duals on the year.
John Arceri had a huge win over Noah Blakely-Beanes at 141 to put the Bulls up 15-9 in the dual. With neither wrestler able to do much in regulation, the bout went to overtime, tied 1-1. It took Arceri less than 10 seconds to secure the win as he immediately attacked and got the takedown of Blakely-Beanes.
However, it wasn't enough as the Roadrunners were able to rally for the win.
The Bulls will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Cal Poly to take on the Mustangs.
