BUFFALO, NY – The 2019-20 season for the University at Buffalo wrestling team will being on Saturday as the Bulls will compete at the Michigan State Open.
After losing six starters from a squad that finished second in the Mid-American Conference a season ago, there will a new look to this year's team. Fortunately, the Bulls will return a pair of national qualifiers, including a MAC champion.
Troy Keller was dominant in his first season with the Bulls. The North Tonawanda native was the MAC champion at 165 lbs. after going 19-8 on the season. He had 12 four-point near falls, the sixth most in school history for a single season.
Last season, Derek Spann finished second at the MAC Championships at 133 lbs. The redshirt-junior lost only one dual on the year, going 16-1 and a perfect 7-0 in MAC duals. He was a national qualifier for the first time in his career.
Other starters returning from a season ago are Jake Lanning at 174 lbs. and Logan Rill at 184 lbs. Sam Schuyler made four dual starts at 197 lbs. and will likely be a full-time starter this season. In the offseason, Schuyler won the 97 kg freestyle national championships at the UWW Junior Nationals.
Buffalo will likely have at least six new faces in the starting lineup this season and Saturday's tournament will help determine who they when the Bulls host Wisconsin in their first dual on November 7.
