BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo Athletics and the National Grid Foundation are proud to once again team up with Buffalo City Schools for Hoops for the Stars. This program connects UB men's and women's basketball student-athletes, coaches and administrators with inner city youth for the purpose of promoting literacy, learning and nutrition.
Through a National Grid Foundation commitment of $20,000, UB Athletics will provide men's and women's basketball tickets to select Buffalo Public Schools to reward students that exhibit hard work in the classroom and positive behavior. UB will distribute 200 tickets to six different men's and women's basketball games this season.
This season, UB is teaming up with seven local schools, the most since starting the program. This year's participating schools are Buffalo United Charter School, Native American Magnet #19, Bennett Park Montessori #32, West Hertel Academy #94, Buffalo Public School #53, Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts #192 and Discovery School #67.
"Now in its third season with University at Buffalo, the National Grid Foundation is incredibly proud of the partnership that delivers a blend of academics and athletics to recognize the most exceptional elementary school students and rewards them for great classroom behavior and performance," said Ed White, executive director of the National Grid Foundation. "We also are so proud of the participating student athletes who take the time to serve as role models and mentors to show these impressionable youngsters the importance of hard work and dedication in both academics and community support."
A special presentation recognizing Hoops for the Stars participating schools will be conducted at the men's basketball game against Ohio on January 14. A celebration for Rising Stars from each participating Buffalo public school will be acknowledged at the UB men's basketball game versus Akron on February 29.
"We are thrilled to once again partner with the National Grid Foundation in support of Buffalo Public Schools for this very important cause," UB Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt said. "This is a great program that promotes important causes like literacy and learning and we are pleased to be able to help reward our area students for their hard work."
