Women's Tennis Wins Second Straight With 5-2 Victory Over Duquesne

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 5-2 win over Duquesne on Friday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center. The victory was UB's second straight win.
For the first time this season, UB dropped the doubles point as Duquesne came away with wins at one and three. Buffalo picked up a win at second doubles as the reigning MAC Doubles Team of the Week of Tanja Stojanovska and Anna Savchenko won 6-3.
The Bulls came back though and were extremely impressive in singles, winning five of the six matches. Senior Lolade Ogungbesan was the first to finish for UB as she came away with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles. Stojanovska then won at first singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, and junior Chantal Martinez Blanco won at second singles, 7-6 (4), 6-2, giving the Bulls the 3-1 lead.
Duquesne won at fifth singles to pull within 3-2 in the match, but sophomore Emel Abibula clinched it for the Bulls with a 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1 win at fourth singles. The Bulls got their final win of the afternoon at sixth singles as junior Sanjana Sudhir overcame a first set defeat to win 5-7, 6-0, 10-5.
"Today was an outstanding day of tennis by both teams and I am really proud of this group for being able to come away with a win over a really good Duquesne squad," said head coach Kristen Maines. "The support was outstanding and you could feel the energy today with both the men and ourselves out there on the courts."
The Bulls will return to the road next weekend for a pair of challenging matches beginning on Saturday at West Virginia. UB will then head to Penn State next Sunday.
