Bulls Drop Series Opener To Miami (OH), 6-1

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team opened its final regular season series with a 6-1 loss to Miami (OH) on Friday afternoon. The Bulls were held to just three hits in the loss.

The RedHawks stranded the bases loaded in the first and UB put two runners in scoring position with just one away in the bottom of the inning, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat. Miami got on the board first in the top of the second with a two-out single, but again stranded the bases loaded.

In the third inning, the RedHawks added three more to take a 4-0 lead. The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as junior Savanna Norcio hit a two-out home run to left center, cutting the Miami lead to 4-1. However, the RedHawks added two runs in the seventh as the inning stayed alive due to a pair of Buffalo errors.

UB went in order in the seventh as the last seven Buffalo batters were retired in the game.

Sophomore Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she allowed four runs and walked four in 3.0 innings. Freshman Ally Power came on in relief and scattered just two hits over 4.0 innings, but was charged with two unearned runs. She also struck out a pair.

The Bulls got three hits on the afternoon. In addition to the Norcio's home run, freshman Katie Weimer singled in the first and sophomore Leandra Jew singled in the fourth.

"Obviously today we didn't have the three ingredients that it takes to win a game: pitching, timely hitting and error-free defense," said head coach Trena Peel. "We will make the appropriate adjustments and bounce back tomorrow stronger and with a whole lot more fight. We are a great team and I believe that we will come out tomorrow and show what we are made of."

The Bulls and RedHawks conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 pm. In between the two games of the doubleheader the Bulls will honor seniors Lauren Gambone and Kenzie Koch, who will each be playing in their final home games at Nan Harvey Field.
