Bulls Open MAC Tournament With Convincing 4-0 Win Over Akron

OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began Mid-American Conference Tournament play on Friday morning with a 4-0 sweep over the Akron Zips, dominating play across the board. With the win, UB moves on to Saturday's MAC Semifinals against Ball State.
The Bulls opened the morning with an extremely impressive display of doubles, beginning with a 6-0 shutout by the number two team of Tanja Stojanovska and Margarita Kotok. UB clinched the point at first doubles with a 6-2 win at number one from Dayana Agasieva and Laura Holterbosch.
Buffalo continued its strong play into singles action, winning the first set in five of the six singles matches. The Bulls picked up two singles wins almost simultaneously as Holterbosch won 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles and Stojanovska beat the MAC Player of the Year at first singles, 6-0, 6-3. Kotok, playing singles for the first time since being injured earlier in the conference season, clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at third singles.
"Our players really stepped up today," said head coach Kristen Maines. "Our upperclassmen really stepped up and showed good leadership, that this is the way we play and this is the energy we need and they did that from the very first point in doubles."
The Bulls will face top-ranked Ball State tomorrow morning at 10:00 am in the MAC Semifinals. The winner will secure a berth in the MAC Championship match on Sunday afternoon.
