
Kentucky Snaps Baseball's Three-Game Winning Streak

LEXINGTON, KY – The University at Buffalo baseball team opened up a three-game series with SEC member Kentucky on Friday with a 5-1 loss at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, KY. The loss snapped UB's three-game winning streak as they fell to 3-4 overall on the season while the Wildcats improved to 5-3.
The Wildcats got on the board early in the first inning as Evan White hit a solo homer to left field with one out in the third. Alec Tuohy was then able to get a foul out and a line out to get out of the inning with the Bulls trailing 1-0.
The Bulls responded quickly as they were able to tie the game, 1-1, in the second inning. Vinny Mallaro opened the inning with a walk before Mike Abrunzo hit a hard single to left field. The pair advanced a base on a wild pitch before Connor Regan reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Mallaro for his third RBI of the season.
Kentucky took the lead back in the bottom half of the second inning as Luke Becker singled and came around to score after a Buffalo error.
The Bulls had a great opportunity to tie or take the lead in the fourth inning as Mallaro started the rally with a double down the left field line. After a pair of walks to Abrunzo and Ben Vey, the Bulls had the bases loaded with only one out but the Bulls were not able to score in the inning.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning as Becker was able to score on a wild pitch by Tuohy. The two sides went scoreless in the fifth before Kentucky extended their lead to three, 4-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Wildcats opened the inning with a pair of singles before Marcus Carson picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After a scoreless seventh from the Bulls, Kentucky added another run on a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1. The Bulls went hitless in their last five innings as the Wildcats ran way with the 5-1 win on Friday afternoon.
UB couldn't get the bats going on Friday as they earned just three hits for the game. Vinny Mallaro hit the Bulls lone extra base hit with a double while Abrunzo and Bobby Sheppard notched singles.
Tuohy finished off his afternoon going 6.2 innings while allowing nine hits, four earned runs and striking out three Kentucky batters. Logan Harasta closed out the game going 1.1 innings in relief while allowing no runs or hits and striking out one Kentucky batter.
Kentucky finished the game with nine hits while Zack Brown went 7.0 scoreless innings on the mound while striking out six UB batters.
The Bulls and Wildcats will return to the diamond on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm in the second game of the three-game series. Brandon Mumaw (1-1, 4.85 ERA) will take the mound for the Bulls while Dustin Beggs (2-0, 0.64 ERA) will toe the rubber for Kentucky.
