
Baseball Falls On The Road To Kentucky, 14-3

LEXINGTON, KY – The University at Buffalo baseball team fell on the road on Saturday at Kentucky by the score of 14-3. With the loss, the Bulls drop to 3-5 overall while the Wildcats improve to 6-3.
The Bulls fell behind early on as the Wildcats got on the board in the first inning with two runs. Kentucky scored on a sacrifice fly and a single to take the early 2-0 edge. In the second inning, the Wildcats put the game out of reach as they were able to score four runs, making it 6-0 in favor of the home squad.
After adding two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Bulls were finally able to break through with a run in the top of the fourth as Vinny Mallaro crushed a two-out home run to deep left field, his second homer of the season and team-leading sixth RBI.
The Wildcats added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and runs in the fifth and sixth to take the 12-1 lead into the seventh inning. The Bulls added a run in the seventh inning as Chris Kwitzer was hit by a pitch and Mike Abrunzo brought him around to score as he hit a deep double to center field. The RBI was Abrunzo's fifth of the season.
Kentucky made it 13-2 in the bottom of the seventh before the Bulls notched their final run of the game in the eighth. Billy Hartford opened the inning with his first career homer, clearing the left field wall to make the score 13-3. The Wildcats finished the scoring in the bottom half of the inning as they claimed the 14-3 win on Saturday.
The Bulls finished the game with three hits as Mallaro went 1-for-2 with a homer and a walk while Abrunzo went 1-for-4 with a double and Hartford went 1-for-3 with a homer in the loss. The Wildcats were able to put up 14 runs on 21 hits on the afternoon.
Blair Lakso went 2.1 innings in relief of starter Brandon Mumaw and allowed three runs while striking out three batters. Ben Vey pitched 1.2 innings of one-run ball while Ben Hartz made his first appearance of the season in the eighth inning, getting Tyler Marshall to pop up to first base for the final out of the inning with a runner on third.
The Bulls and Wildcats will return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm in the final game of the three-game series. Sophomore RHP Charlie Sobieraski (1-1, 7.36 ERA) will take the mound for the Bulls while Kyle Cody (1-1, 2.61 ERA) will toe the rubber for Kentucky.
