BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo, State University of New York women's basketball student-athlete Mackenzie Loesing has received a medical disqualification for chronic right ankle instability ending her intercollegiate career.
"Mackenzie has been very instrumental in our women's basketball team's success over the last three years," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "It is with great sadness I share that Mackenzie will not play for us her senior season. Though she has had repeated surgeries, her ankle has not responded well enough for her to continue to play. After meeting with Mackenzie on several occasions, we have agreed that it is in her best interest to discontinue playing basketball at a competitive level."
Loesing, a biomedical sciences major, was named MAC Sixth Player of the Year and tallied All-MAC Third-Team recognition after becoming just the fifth junior in program history to score 1,000 career points. She completed the 2014-15 season with four top-10 rankings on UB's all-time career lists sitting seventh with 123 three-point field goals, eighth with 276 free throws and a scoring average of 13.7 and ninth with 1,243 points.
"Mackenzie will stay involved with our program and remain at UB for her senior year. She will focus on her academics and remain connected with our program as a student assistant coach. She is a great ambassador of our sport," praised Legette-Jack. "She exemplifies what a very proud coach calls a student-athlete. Mackenzie left her legacy here at UB. Though we wish that we had one more year of seeing that three fly through the air, we will always say, 'it's good!'"
As a junior, Loesing played in 30 of the Bulls' 32 games and ranked second on the team with 13.3 points per game. She led UB in scoring 10 times and scored in double figures 22 times, highlighted by four 20-point games. She recorded season-best performances of 32 points, seven rebounds, 10 field goals, five three pointers, 10 free throws, four assists, four steals and one block. Loesing tallied MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week on Jan. 14 and was named to the Academic All-MAC Team. A Preseason All-MAC East and All-Big 4 First-Team pick, Loesing was named UB Female Athlete of the Week on Jan. 12 and Big 4 Player of the Week on March 2.
