BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball team (11-22, 5-10 MAC) dropped their third straight game on Tuesday afternoon to Canisius, 16-5. Charlie Sobieraski and Mitchell Machi recorded a home run apiece in the loss for the Bulls.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Bulls offense came in the bottom of the seventh inning as Machi dug in at home plate and connected on a big hack then led to his first career long ball to center field. The Machi homer plated Sobieraski and Chris Kwitzer who each singled earlier in the inning, making the score 12-5 in favor of the Golden Griffins. The Bulls were not able to get any closer, falling 16-5 on the road.
Sobieraski led the way offensively for the Bulls as he finished the game going 2-for-4 with his team-leading third home run of the season to go along with two runs scored. Kwitzer also had a multi-hit game for UB finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Making his first career start, catcher Tyler Utz made the most of his chance as he finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and also threw out a base runner trying to steal third base in the opening inning.
UB fell behind early as starting pitcher Brandon Bentley struggled to get outs in the second inning. The Golden Griffins struck for three runs in the second inning and backed that up with two in the third and four in the fourth, taking the 9-1 lead after four innings. Sobieraski's long ball was the lone run UB scored through four innings as he connected on the shot to straight away center in the second inning.
The Bulls produced a run in the sixth inning as Utz opened up with a single to right field for his first career hit. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Utz moved over to third as Nick Sinay grounded out. Brian Dudek then notched an RBI single to right field to score Utz, his ninth RBI of the season.
In the seventh, Canisius was able to score three runs and Machi responded with a three-run home run of his own. The Golden Griffins offense didn't let up as they were able to score a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to put the game away.
After recording an infield single to third base in the first inning, Sinay extended his team-best streak of reaching base safely to 20 games. Once on first base, Sinay took off for second and earned his 33 stolen base of the season, ranking him first in the nation in stolen bases and just four shy of the program record for stolen bases in a season (37).
Logan Harasta pitched three innings in relief on Tuesday, allowing four hits and no earned runs while fanning two batters. Alec Tuohy and Sobieraski each pitched an inning in relief as well, striking out two batters each.
UB will return to the diamond on Friday as they will open up a three-game MAC series with Western Michigan on the road. Game time Friday is 3:00 pm.
