UB Men's Tennis Suffers Setback in MAC Opener

BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at Mid-American Conference opponent Binghamton Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulls (8-8, 0-1 MAC) dropped a pair of doubles matches to the Bearcats (3-14, 1-2 MAC), before picking up singles wins at the fifth and sixth spots in their MAC opener.
"We expected Binghamton to play like their backs were against the wall, and they did," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "Credit to them and Coach Nick, they really played well. They have the toughest schedule in the MAC and their record is no indication of their level. We struggled adapting to the conditions and didn't get the big points that we needed."
A tight match, UB's third doubles duo of senior Damien David and junior Akhil Mehta was edged 7-6 (4), before BU took the doubles point with a 7-6 (3) first doubles win over junior Sergio Arevalillo and sophomore Jonathan Hannestad, thus suspending Pablo Alvarez and Amar Hromic's second doubles match at 6-6.
Hannestad defeated Thomas Caputo at fifth singles, 7-6 (4), 6-3, and Arevalillo took Frenk Kote, 7-5, 6-2, at the sixth position for UB's two victories. Alvarez, went three at first singles, but was defeated by Sid Hazarika, 7-5, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (5). David, too, played extras at second singles, dropping a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 outcome to Robin Lesage. Eliott Hureau outlasted Hromic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at four.
"Now we are faced with a tough road trip to a very good Western team, and we have to keep our heads up and play like our backs are against the wall."
The Bulls will return to action on Saturday at Western Michigan with a 1 pm match.
