KENT, OH - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, softball team was swept in its MAC-opening series on Sunday as Kent State defeated the Bulls, 6-4 and 7-3. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Nan Harvey Field, but were moved to Kent State due to unplayable field conditions at home. Despite playing at Kent, UB was the home team in each game.
In the opener, UB got out to an early 2-0 lead as senior Hayley Barrow hit a two-run home run to left field, but Kent State scored one in the top of the second and and three in the top of the fourth. A sacrifice fly from senior Alexis Curtiss in the fifth pulled the Bulls within one, but the Golden Flashes hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 advantage.
Junior Lauren Gambone opened the bottom of the sixth up with a solo home run to center field as UB pulled within two and then had one last opportunity in the seventh. The Bulls loaded the bases with two outs in the final inning, but freshman Sarah Edwards struck out swinging as a pinch hitter to end the game.
Barrow picked up the loss in the circle, while Kent State pitcher Emma Johnson struck out 14 Bulls in the game.
In the second game, Kent State took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third when the Bulls finally got on the board as Curtiss doubled home freshman Leandra Jew. Kent State scored two more in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth to go ahead 7-1. UB scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as Curtiss scored on an error following a leadoff double and freshman Danielle Lallos doubled to left center, which scored Gambone.
Redshirt sophomore Bobbi Langlois picked up the loss in the circle for UB. The Bulls matched the hit total of the Golden Flashes as both teams had 10 hits in the game. Curtiss went 3-for4 to lead UB, while Gambone added two hits.
The Bulls will step out of conference on Wednesday as they head to Binghamton for a doubleheader. This game was originally supposed to be played last Wednesday, but was postponed due to weather.
