HOUSTON, TX – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York baseball team let up six early-inning runs and fell to 21st-ranked Houston, 9-1, Friday at Cougar Field.
The Bulls (3-8) dropped their second straight, while the Cougars (11-7) picked up their third consecutive victory.
Junior Mike Abrunzo led the Bulls with two hits and one run. Senior Justin Gonzalez added a hit and an RBI. Also picking up one hit each were sophomore Brian Dudek, junior Bobby Sheppard and freshman Charlie Sobieraski.
Houston tallied 10 hits to the Bulls' six, getting out to a 3-0 lead in the first. A single to left center by Cougar Josh Vidales led to a 5-0 margin in the second, before Connor Wong added another in the third. Wong tripled to open the inning before Michael Wisz brought him home.
Sophomore Alec Tuohy pitched three scoreless innings before the Cougars added a seventh. The Bulls got on the board in the eighth. Abrunzo doubled to center to open the inning. With one out, Gonzalez stepped to the plate to double down the right field line and bring home Abrunzo. Two additional Bulls stuck out swinging to leave Gonzalez stranded on base.
After several defensive substitutions in the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars finalized all scoring with two insurance runs.
The Bulls' starter, junior Ben Hartz, suffered the loss at the plate allowing three runs before being relieved by Tuohy. He faced 25 batters over the course of 6.2 innings, while junior Blair Lakso closed the game, pitching one inning. Tuohy struck out three batters.
The Bulls will continue their three-game series Saturday at 7:30 pm before playing one final game against the Cougars Sunday at noon.
