BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University at New York women's basketball team completed its two-game exhibition schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 79-56 win over Daemen, outscoring the visiting Wildcats 39-5 off the bench.
UB took a 24-14 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, outscoring Daemen in each of the four 10-minute sessions. A three pointer from junior Joanna Smith capped off a 13-4 run to open up the game and a pair of free throws from freshman Gabbi Bade, gave the Bulls their largest lead of the opening quarter at 11.
Daemen cut the lead down to four midway through the second quarter, but the Bulls responded with an 8-0 run following a layup from sophomore Stephanie Reid and a free throw by Katherine Ups. The Bulls took a 12-point lead into the half as Courtney Wilkens was fouled with less than a second left and drained both free throws.
The Bulls outscored Daemen 24-8 in the third quarter as they went on a 14-1 run over the final 4:40 of the quarter. UB got back-to-back layups from Brittany Morrison in the run as well as six points from Bade, who was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three free throws, which was then followed by her converting the old fashioned three-point play.
A pair of free throws from Mariah Suchan in the fourth quarter gave the Bulls their largest lead of the game at 74-42 with 3:45 left and Daemen would get no closer than 23.
"I like what we have done as a unit and I like how aggressive we have been with pushing the ball," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We put up more threes today than we would have liked, but I like the aggression that this team shows."
Smith led the Bulls with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Bade added 10 points and five steals, while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Katherine Ups added nine points, while her sister Liisa Ups had eight. Wilkens finished with seven points off the bench.
The Bulls, who finished with 60 rebounds on the day, were led by seven boards from Suchan and Ayoleka Sodade. All 13 players that got into the game had at least two points and at least one rebound.
UB will open the regular season next Saturday at Alumni Arena when the Bulls host LIU Brooklyn at 2:00 pm.
