
Bulls Top Crosstown Rival Canisius, 54-40

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's basketball team won their second straight game to open the season with a 54-40 victory over crosstown-rival Canisius at Alumni Arena on Tuesday night.
Stephanie Reid filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals to pace the Bulls. Katherine Ups added 10 points and seven rebounds – both career highs.
After trailing 11-7 following one quarter of play, the Bulls opened the second quarter on a 13-2 scoring run, which included a Joanna Smith three-pointer that gave the Bulls the lead for good. Three straight Reid driving layups extended the UB lead from nine points to 15. The Bulls held a 30-19 advantage at the half.
The Bulls lead remained in double-figures for the rest of the game, growing to as many as 21 points.
Mariah Suchan was an early spark for the Bulls, scoring five of her seven points in the first half. Joanna Smith added nine points and Brittany Morrison had six.
The Bulls had another strong defensive game with five blocks, 13 steals and forced 19 Canisius turnovers. Gabi Bade joined Reid with team-high honors in steals with three. UB got blocks from five different players.
"In state rivalries are always exciting. This team has really bought into the defensive side of the ball and my Australian connection to my sides (Stephanie Reid and Katherine Ups) played great tonight," head coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. "It was Stephanie Reid's mother's birthday today and since she couldn't be with her in person she celebrated her on the basketball court."
The Bulls will hit the road for their first away contest of the season when they play at Massachusetts on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
