Women's Basketball Set To Host Big 4 Rival Canisius On Tuesday Night

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 MAC) is set to host Big 4 rival Canisius College on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm inside Alumni Arena.
The local rivalry will see its 43rd edition with Canisius carrying a 30-12 series advantage dating back to 1970-71. The Griffs won 15 straight from 1978-79 to 1991-92 and seven consecutive from 2003-04 to 2009-10. The Bulls have been dominant as of late, claiming four of the last five, most recently defeating Canisius, 72-55, on Dec. 29, 2014 at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The Bulls enter Tuesday night's non-conference match after a dominating defensive performance in their season opener against LIU Brooklyn. The Bulls held the BlackBirds to just 31.0% shooting from the floor as UB was able to prevail 55-38 in front of the home fans. The 38 points allowed by UB was the least amount of points they have allowed in a game since Feb. 23, 2013 against Ohio. Leading the Bulls offensive charge was junior Joanna Smith who finished with 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. Katherine Ups had a solid game for the Bulls as well, scoring eight points, grabbing four boards and earning three steals while Mariah Suchan notched a career-high eight points off the bench. Point guard Stephanie Reid ran the Bulls offense all afternoon long, finishing with six points, a team-high six assists and a career-high five steals in the victory.
The Canisius Golden Griffins opened up their 2015-16 campaign with a heartbreaking loss on the road at Youngstown State as they fell 53-51. The Griffs were called for a blocking foul with 0.6 seconds left of the clock and the Penguins converted on both free throws to earn the victory. Crystal Porter was the lone Griff in double figures as she finished off her night with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and two blocks in the losing effort. Tamara Miksovic had a solid all around game for the Griffs as she finished with seven points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals while going 3-for-5 from the floor.
