COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York wrestling team (2-0, 0-0 MAC) impressed on the opening weekend at the Terrapin duals as they defeated Davidson 47-0 and the host Maryland Terrapins, 19-13.
"What a great feeling to finally come out on top," stated third-year head coach John Stutzman. "Even in the matches we lost, we wrestled hard. It's time to evaluate our performance and get back to the drawing board and continue to progress. We need to get ready for the Northeast Duals in two weeks."
The Bulls opened up the weekend with a decisive victory over Davidson, downing the Wildcats 47-0. UB had three grapplers win by fall as redshirt freshman Bryan Lantry pinned Zach Jones just 1:31 into the match while Jason Estevez pinned his opponent at 141-pounds and James Benjamin pinned his foe in 4:36 at 197-pounds. Kyle Akins earned a dominant 14-2 major decision victory while Jake Gunning had his way with his opponent, winning by major decision 12-2. Tim Schaefer, Muhamed McBryde and Joe Ariola each battled, picking up decision victories as the Bulls shutout the Wildcats.

Kyle Akins started the Bulls off at 125-pounds as he improved to 2-0 on the day with a tough 6-5 win over his foe from the Big Ten. After a major decision loss at 133-pounds and a decision loss at 141-pounds, Colt Cotten took to the mat and earned a gritty 2-1 decision victory for his first victory of the season.
After a loss at 157-pounds gave Maryland the lead back, Tyler Rill took to the mat and gave the Bulls some momentum back as he battled out a 3-2 win. The momentum that Rill stole back for the Bulls helped as UB won their next three matches. Muhamed McBryde put in a great effort as he earned the 4-0 decision victory while Joe Ariola won by 6-3 decision to improve to 2-0 on the day. At 197-pounds, James Benjamin picked up the 11-2 major decision victory to close out his huge day for the Bulls.
