ALBANY, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York wrestling team (4-1, 0-0 MAC) collected a pair of dual meet victories on Sunday afternoon at the Northeast Duals to improve to 4-1 overall, their best start to a season since 2005-06. The Bulls dominated Springfield College 51-0 and then collected a 17-16 victory over Lock Haven, as Jake Gunning won the final match of the day, 5-0, to give UB the win.
"What a great weekend for the guys," said head coach John Stutzman. "Everyone wrestled hard and we had the 19th ranked team in the country, West Virginia, on the ropes. Colt Cotten, Bryan Lantry and Jake Gunning all had great days and we were able to beat some nationally ranked opponents and NCAA qualifiers. Now we just need to continue to improve and get better."
The Bulls had three guys go a perfect 3-0 on Sunday as Colt Cotten improved to 5-0 overall on the year after earning a technical fall against Springfield and major decisions against West Virginia and Lock Haven. Bryan Lantry went 3-0 as he won two by decision and one by fall while Gunning improved to 4-1 on the year with two decision victories and a pin.
The Bulls completely dominated the opening match of the afternoon against Springfield College as they were able to claim the 51-0 victory. Five UB grapplers were able to earn pins, Kyle Akins, Lantry, Tyler Rill, James Benjamin and Gunning. Cotten, Tim Schaefer and Joe Ariola each earned technical fall victories over their opponents as the Bulls cruised to the victory.
Against nationally-ranked West Virginia, UB put together another strong performance but they came up just short, falling 19-13. After Akins lost a close match against #3 Zeke Moisey, the Bulls saw Lantry, Brandon Lapi and Cotten each earned victories. The most impressive by Cotten, who won by major decision, 11-1, over his opponent. The Bulls then lost five straight matches before Gunning stopped the bleeding and won at heavyweight, 4-2, over AJ Vizcarrondo.
The third and final dual of the afternoon went back-and-forth as both the two sides alternated victories throughout. After Lock Haven took the early 6-3 lead, Cotten won by major decision to give the Bulls the slim 7-6 lead. After a loss at 157, Rill collected a major decision victory and Ariola defeated his ranked opponent. Lock Haven was able to cling to a 16-14 lead heading into the final match and Gunning came up huge for UB, earning the shutout, 5-0 decision.
The Bulls will return to the mat on Sunday, November 22 as they will head to the New York State Championships in Cornell, NY.
