BUFFALO, NY – It all came down to the final event. Megan Burns chased down Bowling Green's Hannah Newman in the last 50 yards of the 400 freestyle relay to give the Bulls a victory over the previously unbeaten Falcons, 154-146, at the Alumni Arena Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
"It doesn't get any better than a meet like today," head coach Andy Bashor said. "Every race was contested. Going back and forth. Then it just came down to the last relay. It was so great to be home and to honor the seniors with a win today against a really tough Bowling Green team."
Only a freshman, Burns led the way for Bulls as she also won the 50 freestyle (23.11) and the 100 freestyle (49.93) - setting season-best times in both events.
Jessica Powers also won a pair of individual events for the Bulls. She won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.95 – just edging out teammate Spencer Rodriguez. Powers also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:03.40.
However, for the first time this season, Powers did not win the 1,000 freestyle as her teammate Hannah Miller swam a 10:24.82 to take the event. Powers placed second.
Taylor Steffl won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.45.
The Bulls fared very well in the diving well, taking first, second and third on both the one-meter and three-meter boards. Mackenzie Moss won the one-meter board with a score of 265.05 and the three-meter board with a score of 271.55. Valerie Lortie and Abbey Croce placed second and third, respectively, in both events.
But it all came down the 400 freestyle relay where Powers, Steffl, Eve Kosten and Burns chased down the Falcons and won the race in a time of 3:25.97.
The Bulls will next compete at the Ohio State Invite beginning Feb. 14 in Columbus, OH.
