BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York wrestling team (5-9, 0-4 MAC) was defeated on Friday night on the road at #20 Old Dominion by the score of 33-12. The Bulls collected a pair of pins from Max Soria and Sean Peacock but were defeated in their other eight matches on Friday night.
"We wrestled well in spurts tonight," said head coach John Stutzman. "Sean Peacock wrestled hard, the Buffalo way, as he earned a huge fall. We are on to Ohio, where we will regroup and get prepared for a tough MAC contest. We are gaining momentum and wrestling with a sense of urgency."
The dual could not have started out any better for the Bulls on Friday night as freshman Sean Peacock opened the night with a pin at 133-pounds over Michael Hayes. Peacock started out slow as he gave up a takedown in the first and trailed 2-0 entering the second period. As the second period began, Peacock began to take over the match as he earned a escape and then a takedown before pinning Hayes at 3:48. The pin for Peacock was his fifth win by pin and his 16th overall win of the season.
After eight straight losses, senior captain Max Soria took to the mat in the final match of the evening and pinned Josh Markham in the first period. Soria dominated the match from the opening whistle as he earned a quick takedown and two-point near fall to take the four point lead earlier on. A minute later, Soria earned the takedown and pinned his opponent for his team-leading seventh pin of the season. Soria now has a 18-6 overall record, a 9-4 dual meet record and a 3-1 MAC dual meet record.
With a chance to give the Bulls a dominating early lead, redshirt freshman Colt Cotten took to the mat against #9 Chris Mecate. Mecate started quick as he earned a takedown in the first period but Cotten continued to fight and battled back as he trailed 4-3 in the third period. After earning a escape in the third, Cotten search for the winning takedown but he was unable to come through, falling by the score of 5-4 because of riding time. Cotten fell to 1-1 overall on the season after returning from a knee injury last weekend.
The Bulls will return to the mat on Sunday afternoon as they will travel to MAC foe Ohio in search of their first conference win of the season. The match on Sunday will start at 1:00 pm.
