TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York women's basketball team went to overtime for the first time this season suffering a 75-63 setback to host Toledo at John F. Savage Arena Wednesday evening.
The Bulls (9-8, 2-4 MAC), who led the Rockets (11-6, 4-2 MAC) for 33:45 of the game, did not trail in the second half. UB led by as many as 13 in the second, but Toledo's Inma Zanoguera tallied the last 13 UT points of regulation to force an extra period. She scored 20 of her game-best 28 in the second stint.
Though it took 16:32 of the first for the Rockets to score 17, they managed that in the OT period alone. They were a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 8-for-10 at the line. The Rockets hit a jumper and added a three to take a 63-58 edge just 1:11 into OT. A Reid layup made it a one-possession game, but Toldeo put the game out of reach with six unanswered while running the clock down to 1:19.
UB used a 14-2 run to secure its largest lead of the game, 25-10, at 5:08 of the first. The Rockets answered with a 14-4 streak of their own to cut within 29-24 of UB at the break. UB picked up 11 points off UB turnovers in the first frame as Toledo committed 12.
"I loved the energy that we brought to the game today," said third-year head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "I thought that we really had each other's backs. The shots didn't fall as well as they could have. I thought that we needed to attack the basket more. We will learn from this and continue to get better."
Senior Kristen Sharkey led the Bulls with 21 points, highlighted by a career-best four three pointers. Sophomore Alexus Malone and rookie Stephanie Reid chipped in nine apiece, a career-best for Reid. Malone had a game-high 10 boards and Sharkey added eight, though the Rockets held a 41-37 advantage in the category. UB posted a season-high 19 assists with Reid and Christa Baccas tallying career-bests with six and five, respectively, to pace the Bulls. Sharkey had a game-high three steals as UB forced Toledo to commit 19 turnovers.
The Rockets, who attempted 36 free throws to the Bulls' seven, hit 14 at the line in the second and added eight in overtime to seal the victory.
Toledo shot .444 percent from the floor. UB hit .352 percent of its shots, while hitting a season-best 10 threes.
Zanoguera was 15-for-15 at the charity stripe en route to her 28. Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott added 11 points and Brenae Harris chipped in 10. Sophie Reecher grabbed nine boards and Zanoguera added eight to go with a contest-best seven assists as Toledo improved to 18-3 all-time against the Bulls.
