BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York wrestling team (5-8, 0-3 MAC) was downed on Friday night in front of the home crowd at Alumni Arena by the visiting Columbia Lions by the score of 27-9. Despite holding a 10-3 advantage early on, the Bulls dropped their third straight home dual.
"It was another tough loss for us tonight," stated second-year head coach John Stutzman. "We were close in all aspects of the dual tonight but couldn't pick up the victory. Sean (Peackock) wrestled great for us tonight against a former national qualifier and Colt (Cotten) went out there and did what he was known for in high school, pinning his opponent. It all comes back to us learning how to win and this was a strong team effort and team loss tonight."
After a late takedown and two-point near fall gave Johnson Mai of Columbia the victory over Max Soria at 125-pounds, 7-5, freshman Sean Peacock took to the mat with a purpose. Peacock surrendered a quick takedown to his opponent but escaped quickly and responded with a takedown and two-point near fall of his own to take the 5-2 lead after one period. Peacock entered the third period with a 6-2 lead and he would add to that, earning a takedown and three-point near fall to earn the major decision victory over Angelo Amenta, 11-2. With the win, Peacock improved his record to 15-11 overall and 8-5 in duals.
Appearing in his first match for the blue and white, redshirt freshman Colt Cotten took to the mat at 141-pounds and electrified the crowd with his attacking style. The Benton, PA native started quick with a takedown in the first minute of action to earn the 2-0 lead heading into the second period. After earning an escape to start the period, Cotten quickly recorded a takedown and pinned Jacob Macalolooy. Cotten notched his first career pin in his first career dual for the Bulls in just 4:19.
After the Cotten pin gave the Bulls the 10-3 lead, freshman Justin Cooksey took to the mat at 149-pounds against Connor Sutton, a grappler he faced earlier this season at the NYS Championships. After a hard fought battle with Sutton, Cooksey allowed a late escape in the third period and was defeated 2-0, making the score of the dual 10-6 in favor of the home team.
With the Bulls clinging to the slim 10-9 advantage, Rrok Ndokaj entered trying to extend the lead for the Bulls. Ndokaj's opponent Tyrel White started quick as he earned two takedowns in the opening period to take the 4-2 lead. Trailing by just two, Ndokaj earned a quick escape in the final period but was not able to get a takedown to earn the victory, as he fell by the score of 4-3.
Columbia took their first lead of the dual after the sixth match as they owned the 12-10 edge and they never looked back. The Lions went on to win the final four matches of the night. The Bulls were given a misconduct after one of the matches, which deducted a point from their team score as they fell 27-9 on Friday night.
UB will return to the mat on Friday, January 23 as they travel to take on #21 Old Dominion for a 7:00 pm dual.
