
UB Wrestling Splits Sunday Duals; Downs Dakota Wesleyan 45-3

BROOKINGS, SD - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York wrestling team (5-7, 0-3 MAC) wrapped up their three dual weekend with a split on Sunday afternoon on the road at South Dakota State. The Bulls dominated Dakota Wesleyan in the morning, downing them 45-3, and then they were downed by South Dakota State in the afternoon by the score of 29-8.
"Another tough weekend for us," stated second-year head coach John Stutzman. "Leaving here 5-7 is not what we wanted, so we have to regroup and get back to the basics. We need to learn from our mistakes and grow."
The Bulls once again featured a lineup with five true freshman and they flourished in the first dual of the day against Dakota Wesleyan, as all five won their match. Freshman Sean Peacock turned in the most impressive match of the dual against Chad McCannon as he earned a pin just 1:20 into the match. The pin for Peacock is his fourth victory by fall of the season as he improved to 14-10 overall.
At 149-pounds, freshman Justin Cooksey had a great day for the Bulls as he earned a pair of victories to improve his record to 9-11 on the year. Cooksey completely dominated Eutimio Mendivil of Dakota Wesleyan in his first match, as he controlled the match and earned a 18-4 major decision victory. In his next match, Cooksey was just as dominant as he defeated Coltan Laganiere by decision, 8-3. The true freshman was the lone UB grappler with a perfect 2-0 record on Sunday.
Max Soria got back to his winning ways in the opening match against Dakota Wesleyan as he earned his team-leading sixth victory of the season by fall, just 2:10 into the match. Soria earned the pin over Will Seydel for his 17th win of the season. True Freshman Alex Smythe got in the win column with his most impressive dual match of the year, defeating Brook Woehl by technical fall, 17-2, at 7:00. Joe Ariola also collected his 11th win of the season at 197-pounds by technical fall, downing Alexander Smith 18-3 in only 2:05 minutes.
Also collecting victories for UB in their morning match against Dakota Wesleyan were Muhamid McBryde and Brett Perry. Perry won his match by major decision, 10-1, while McBryde won by a 9-4 decision over Alex Osborne.
The Bulls had a tough afternoon dual as they were downed by the score of 29-8 by the host South Dakota State Jackrabbitts. Picking up the most impressive victory of the match for UB was Rocco Russo, as he downed Jaxon Fitzgerald by technical fall, 17-2. Russo dominated the match from the first whistle and earned his ninth win of the year in the process.
UB will return home on Friday, January 16 for a conference dual against Columbia at 7:00 pm at Alumni Arena. The dual against Columbia will be the Bulls first home dual in over a month.
