BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-0-1) will aim to stay undefeated on Friday afternoon as they travel to take on their toughest test of the 2014 season, #3 Virginia Tech, at 4:00 pm. The Hookies enter the contest with a perfect 7-0-0 record so far this season and have outscored their opponents 28-3.
The UB women have been playing at a high level so far this season in non-conference action as they have yet to allow a goal. With the 2-0 shutout victory over Niagara on Sunday, the Bulls extended their shutout streak to 470 minutes, the longest streak to start a season and second longest overall in program history.
The 4-0-1 start for the Bulls is the best start to a season since the 2008 campaign when the team started with an identical record. Three of the four victories for UB have came against Big Four foes, marking the first time since 2000 that the Bulls defeated all three opponents in the same season.
The strength of the Bulls all season long has been their defense as they have allowed a total of 20 shots on goal through five games and have yet to allow a goal. Leading the Bulls defensive efforts are reining MAC Defensive Player of the Week Jackie Hall, Sophie Therien, Kristin Markiewicz and captain Courtney Mann.
Leading UB's offensive efforts so far this season is sophomore Celina Carrero who has racked up two goals and an assist to go along with eight shots. Carrero scored the Bulls second goal of the game on Sunday at Niagara as she was given a breakaway pass by Megan Giesen and buried the ball behind the NU keeper.
Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has been UB's biggest surprise so far this season as she came in and started from day one. Dougall had big shoes to fill as she was replacing one of the best goalkeepers in program history, Ainsley Wheldon. Dougall has yet to allow a goal this season as she has accumulated a 4-0-1 record with four shutouts on 20 saves.
Following Friday's clash with the nationally ranked Hookies, the Bulls will have a week off as they will travel to take on Cornell on Sept. 19 at 4:00 pm.
