BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team swept the final MAC East Player of the Week awards on Tuesday morning, the conference announced from it's league headquarters. Senior Tori Speckman was named the MAC East Pitcher of the Week for a second straight week and for the fifth time this season, while junior Hayley Barrow was named the MAC East Player of the Week.
Speckman picked up victories in both games of the two-game sweep at Kent State. She pitched her second no hitter of the season on Saturday as the Bulls defeated the Golden Flashes 9-0. Speckman pitched to just two over the minimum as she struck out four and did not walk anybody. Speckman allowed just one run in the first inning on Sunday, but struck out five, while scattering five hits. Speckman has now won five consecutive decisions dating back to last weekend. In the two games this past week, Speckman had a WHIP of just 0.83, while finishing with an ERA of 0.58. The two victories led the Bulls to their first ever MAC East Title. During the weekend, Speckman also went over 200 strikeouts for the season and 500 for her career.
Barrow went 4-for-6 from the plate in the weekend sweep at Kent State as she hit the go ahead home run on Sunday afternoon, leading the Bulls to their first ever Mid-American Conference Division Title. Barrow went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate on Sunday afternoon as she had three of UB's five hits. On Saturday, Barrow reached base twice, scoring both times in the 9-0 win. Barrow is hitting .298 on the season, with four doubles and five home runs. She has driven in 18 runs for the year.
The Bulls open MAC Tournament play on Wednesday evening at 5:00 pm against Northern Illinois.
