Bulls Overpowered in Saturday Loss

BUFFALO, NY - The visiting Miami Redhawks (25-25, 14-9 MAC) used a powerful offense to build an early lead in Saturday's matchup, and held off another furious rally from Buffalo (23-21, 12-10 MAC) to win 9-7 and claim the Mid-American Conference weekend series. The top four hitters in the UB lineup combined for eight hits, but could not complete the comeback.
The Bulls would score first in the opening inning after Matt Pollock drove in Nick Sinay from second, but would only get two hits from the second through seventh innings while Miami would put up eight runs. Sinay would create his own offense again in the fifth, leading off with a triple before coming home on a wild pitch.
The Redhawks would hit six doubles and three home runs in the game, chasing UB starter Anthony Magovney after six innings where he allowed nine hits and six runs. Down 8-2 coming to bat in the seventh inning, though, the UB offense would begin to build a rally.
Back-to-back doubles from Jimmy Topps and Sinay would score the first run, and Sinay would later score on a groundout to make it an 8-4 game. Then in the eighth, the Bulls would use a two-out error to cut into the lead even more. With two outs, Kyle Brennan reached on an error from the shortstop, and Topps would follow with a triple to the right field corner. After two walks loaded the bases, Tyler Mautner doubled to left to make it an 8-7 game.
Miami would add an insurance run in the ninth, but the Bulls would put the leadoff man on in the bottom of the ninth. The team's luck would run out, though, as a one-out liner from Chris Kwitzer was caught by the first baseman, who caught the runner off base for a game-ending double play.
Now trailing the Redhawks by 1.5 games in the MAC standings, the Bulls will look to take the final game of the weekend tomorrow. The Mother's Day matchup will begin at 1 pm.
