BUFFALO, NY – For the third time in as many games, a UB comeback in the ninth inning would fall short on Sunday afternoon, with the Bulls leaving the bases loaded with the final out made in a 5-4 loss to Miami (26-25, 15-9 MAC). The offense had a slow day at the plate, recording just a pair of fourth-inning hits through the first eight innings.
Despite the slow day, it would be Buffalo 23-22, 12-11 MAC) that would score the game's first run. Jimmy Topps led off the game with a four-pitch walk, then moved to second on a ground out and third off a wild pitch. Matt Pollock would score him on the innings second out as he would ground to the shortstop but gave UB the 1-0 advantage. Pollock, who was the most productive player in the lineup for the game, would help generate the team's second run of the game in the fourth, breaking up the no-hitter with a one-out double before Tyler Mautner drove him home with a single and a 2-0 lead.
The Redhawks would use the long ball again to take the lead for good in the very next inning, as a two-out rally would net them three runs. Mike Burke, the UB starting pitcher, would last into the eighth inning to try and help an overtaxed bullpen. He would allow all five runs over 7.1 innings and allowed eight hits.
Trailing 5-2 in the eighth, another UB run would come around without a hit. Thomas Richards would come on as a pinch hitter and walked, then moved to second on a wild pitch. After moving to third on a fly ball, Topps would bring him in with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the ninth, Pollock got the rally started with his second double of the game to start the bottom of the ninth. After two quick outs, Vinny Mallaro would bloop a single just over the head of a leaping second baseman to make it 5-4. A walk to Kyle Figgins and a hit batter would load the bases, but Mike Scarcello would ground out to end the game.
The home stand continues with another busy week for the team. First up will be a Tuesday doubleheader against Big 4 rival St. Bonaventure, then the regular season will come to a close with three games against Bowling Green starting Thursday afternoon. Tuesday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 pm start.
