BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team continued to pick up honors following one of its best road weekends in school history. Senior Sammi Gallardo was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, while senior Tori Speckman was named the MAC East Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Gallardo batted .500 as she led the Bulls to a perfect 4-0 weekend, with road sweeps at Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. Gallardo began the weekend with a three home run day against Western Michigan. She went 3-for-4 from the plate in the opener and then hit two home runs in the second game, her third multi home run game of the season, driving in four runs. Gallardo also had a double, while walking twice, in the opener against Northern Illinois and on Sunday she drove in a pair of runs with a single as UB won 6-2. Gallardo finished the weekend with eight runs batted in and a slugging percentage of 1.286. She now has 15 home runs on the year, while driving in 36 runs. Both are single-season school records. This is the second time in three weeks that Gallardo has earned player of the week honors.
Speckman went 3-0 this past weekend as she appeared in all but one game over the weekend. The weekend was highlighted on Saturday afternoon as she struck out 11 Northern Illinois batters and allowed just two hits in a 7-2 victory. Speckman pitched both games of the weekend series against the Huskies as she pitched a complete-game four hitter on Sunday, striking out six batters. She began the weekend with a complete-game victory against Western Michigan on Friday as she struck out five against the Broncos. Speckman set both the UB single season and career victories mark this weekend as she now has 17 this season and 43 for her career. Speckman has struck out 194 batters on the year and she is just shy of 500 for her career. This is the fourth time this season that Speckman has been named pitcher of the week.
The Bulls have now picked up seven weekly honors so far during the 2014 season, a program-best for one year. UB will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they begin a two-game series at Kent State.
