BUFFALO, NY – The UB men's tennis team lost its Mid-American Conference opener Sunday afternoon, losing 5-2 to Toledo (7-15, 1-0). The Bulls (9-5, 0-1) won at fifth and sixth singles, but allowed the Rockets to build momentum early in the loss.
Toledo rolled to a quick win of the doubles point, taking the first and second matches by scores of 8-5 and 8-4, respectively. That success spilled over to singles play, as it won straight-set matches at second, third, and fourth to clinch the match early. Sergio Arevalillo would have the team's best performance of the day, taking his match at fifth singles in straight sets. Akhil Mehta bounced back from dropping his first set and would take the next two to close out the day with a win for UB.
"I think deep down we did not play our best match by any means, but Toledo played a great match," head coach Lee Nickell said. "We certainly aren't tough enough right now and we have two weeks to try and get tougher. We learned a valuable lesson today."
The Bulls will have a week off before two more matches at home. It will next host Binghamton on April 4 before a major rivalry match against Western Michigan on April 6.
