ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped its final game of the weekend on Sunday, falling to Idaho State, 3-1, at the Lobo Classic. The Bulls are now 9-7 on the season.
After allowing 16 runs to the Bengals yesterday, the UB pitching staff did a better job controlling the action. Idaho State scored once in the first inning and twice more in the third inning against UB starter Nicole Aviles. The Bulls were held without a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning when senior Sammi Gallardo ended the no-hit and shutout bid with one swing of the bat, sending a solo shot to center field. The Bulls actually had all three of their hits in the fifth, but couldn't get any more runs across the plate.
"We made a lot of adjustments with our pitching today and did a better job of managing their hitters," said head coach Trena Peel. "We have to play error free defense in order to win games. Our defense has to be hungry at all times and ready for the ball."
Aviles picked up her second loss of the season as she allowed seven hits and six walks, while striking out two. Sophomore Ryleigh Fitzgerald and freshman Ashton Earnhardt joined Gallardo with hits in the contest.
The Bulls will return to action on Thursday afternoon as they face Maryland-Baltimore County.
