OXFORD, MS - The University at Buffalo softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday, being shutout for the first time this year in an 8-0 loss to Ole Miss. UB also dropped a 4-2 decision to Bowling Green. The Bulls fall to 7-3 on the year.
Ole Miss 8, Buffalo 0 - 6 Innings
The host Ole Miss Rebels defeated Buffalo in the opener today, 8-0 in six innings. It was the first time that the Bulls have been shutout this season. The Rebels scored their first run in the bottom of the third and then broke the game open with three-run innings in the fourth and fifth.
The Bulls managed just three hits in the game with one coming from juniors Karly Nevez and Hayley Barrow and another off the bat of freshman Ashton Earnhardt.
Senior Tori Speckman picked up her first loss of the season as she allowed seven runs, including five earned runs, striking out three batters.
"You have to make every play in order to beat good teams," said head coach Trena Peel. "We can't have equal or more errors than hits. We came out flat today and dug ourselves into to big of a hole."
Bowling Green 4, Buffalo 2
The Bulls got an early look at a conference foe on Saturday evening as they faced Bowling Green in a non-conference matchup. UB got a solid performance from Speckman, who struck out seven batters in the complete game, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Falcons.
BG got on the board first in the top of the second, but the Bulls tied the game up as Barrow hit her first home run of the season, a shot to left field. The Falcons took advantage of some defensive miscues in the third, scoring a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulls got one run back in the bottom of the third as Alexis Curtiss came in to score following a base hit from Nevez, but they couldn't get any closer. Bowling Green added one run in the top of the seventh.
UB actually outhit Bowling Green, 6-5 as Nevez had a pair of hits to go along with single hits from four other players.
"This was a tough loss, but I am proud of the way Tori bounced back in the circle," said Peel. "She pitched a good game tonight, but our outfield can't have multiple mistakes like we did. We have to catch pop flies and field routine ground balls. We hurt ourselves in both games today."
The Bulls will close out play at the Red and Blue Classic on Sunday against Northern Colorado at 11:00 am eastern time.
