BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, the State University of New York wrestling team (4-4, 0-1 MAC) dropped their home opening dual to #25 Kent State on Saturday night at Alumni Arena by the score of 30-10.
"I thought we wrestled well in spurts tonight," said second-year head coach John Stutzman. "What it comes down to is inexperience and we need to start figuring out a way to win matches."
Redshirt senior captain Max Soria ignited the crowd early on for the Bulls as he pulled out a major decision victory over Del Vinas from Kent State at 125-pounds. Soria was dominant in his match, recording three takedowns a three-point near fall and 3:21 of riding time to earn the 12-2 win. With the win, Soria continues his great start to his final campaign as he is 14-1 on the year and 6-1 in duals.
Appearing in front of the home fans for the first time, redshirt freshman Jason Estevez earned the Bulls three points with a solid 2-1 decision victory over Kyle Bauer. Estevez earned a late escape in the third period to solidify the victory for UB.
After back-to-back Kent State pins, Rrok Ndokaj took to the mat and turned in his best performance of the young season. Ndokaj opened the match with a nice takedown to grab the early lead and he never looked back, downing Tyler Buckwalter by the score of 7-4 after earning the riding time point.
The Ndokaj win brought UB within five points, 15-10, but the Golden Flashes didn't allow the Bulls to get back into the match as they won the final four matches. Kent State earned three wins by decision and one by fall to improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in MAC action.
The Bulls will return to the Alumni Arena mat on Sunday, December 14 as they play host to MAC foe Central Michigan at 1:00 pm. The match will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app.
