BUFFALO, NY – Despite jumping out to a 7-0 start after the first two matches of the afternoon, the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York wrestling team (4-5, 0-2 MAC) dropped their second straight Mid-American Conference dual on Sunday to Central Michigan, 21-10. Max Soria, Sean Peacock and Rrok Ndokaj picked up the victories for the Bulls.
"This was a heartbreaking loss for us today," said second-year head coach John Stutzman. "Its always disappointing to lose but we competed real hard today and we are making huge improvements. We just need to take that next step and start winning close matches."
The match couldn't have started out much better for the Bulls as Soria took to the mat and completely dominated his opponent, collecting a major decision victory and four points for UB. Soria collected a takedown in each period and had 3:44 of riding time as he defeated Brent Fleetwood 10-0. With the win, Soria improved to a career-best 15-1 on the year including a 7-1 dual meet record.
Freshman Sean Peacock had one of his best showings of the season to earn the 12-6 decision victory and three points for UB to extend their early lead to 7-0. Peacock earned a reversal in the first period but entered the second period trailing 3-2. In the second period, Peacock took over as he collected a takedown and a two-point near fall. In the final period he recorded a takedown and was awarded the riding time point after earning 2:05 of riding time.
After Central Michigan won three straight matches to take the 9-7 lead, Ndokaj took to the mat and energized the crowd with a 5-3 victory over Jordan Atienza to give UB the lead right back. After a scoreless first period, Ndokaj got an escape in just 10 seconds and then earned a takedown of Atienza to take the 3-0 lead into the final period. Ndokaj put the match away early in the third period as he earned his second takedown of the match and won his second straight MAC match, improving to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in dual meets.
Five of the seven losses by the Bulls came in the final minute of action as UB fought hard all day long but could not pick up the wins in tight matches.
The Bulls will return to the mat on New Years day as they travel to Chattanooga for the prestigious Southern Scuffle. The two-day Southern Scuffle is one of the biggest wrestling tournaments in the country.
