BROCKPORT, NY – The State University of New York, Buffalo wrestling team (3-1) had a strong showing in many weight classes on Saturday afternoon at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational. Leading the way for the Bulls was senior captain Max Soria who continued his hot start to the season as he won his bracket at 125-pounds while nine others Bulls placed at their respective weight and the Bulls earned a fifth place finish out of seven as a team.
"We wrestled well in spurts today," said second-year head coach John Stutzman. "We are definitely getting better out there. Our young guys are gaining experience and confidence each and every match. As expected, (Max) Soria did awesome for us today."
Soria's strong showing on Saturday was not a surprise, as he entered the season as one of the best 125-pounders in the Mid-American Conference. Soria dominated the bracket as he picked up three straight victories by fall and then won the final match by decision, 3-1. Soria had a good match against Sean Williams from Oklahoma to start but he was able to earn the fall victory in 5:35. Soria then beat Jake Field of Lock Haven by fall in 2:42 and completely dominated Kaleb Lemaire of Lock Haven, winning by fall at 0:22. With his perfect 4-0 showing on Saturday, Soria improves to 7-0 overall on the season.
At 157-pounds, freshman Alex Smythe had a strong showing for the Bulls as he finished in fourth place while senior captain Wally Maziarz took home seventh place after a pair of forfeits to close out his afternoon. Smythe picked up two straight decision victories to open up his afternoon before losing to #12 Justin DeAngelis of Oklahoma by technical fall to head to the finals. After collecting a win by forfeit over teammate Maziarz, Smythe lost the third place match to Elias Biddle of Lock Haven by decision, 6-3. Maziarz collected three wins on the afternoon before forfeiting his final two to take home seventh place in his first matches back from an off season injury.
Freshman Sean Peacock also stayed hot for the Bulls after a perfect 4-0 record last weekend as he went 3-2 on the afternoon, en route to a fourth place finish at 133-pounds. Peacock defeated Kyle Lukowich of Kent State by decision, 7-3, and then won his next match by fall over Eric Velez of Brockport in 2:52. Following a victory by forfeit, Peacock was defeated in the third place match by Ronnie Perry of Lock Haven.
Joe Ariola collected a fourth place finish at 197-pounds as he was defeated by Brad Johnson of Oklahoma twice. Ariola collected a victory by fall over Matt Brozovic of Brockport and by decision over Mike Mirra of Bloomsburg, 9-5.
Also placing in the Bulls first tournament of the season were freshman Rocco Russo (7th), Danny Graham (6th) and Austin Weigel (7th) along with sophomore Rrok Ndokaj (6th) and junior Jarred Lux (7th).
UB will return to the mat on Sunday, November 23 as they travel to Cornell, NY for the New York State Collegiate Championships. Matches will begin at 9:00 am.
