ALBANY, NY – The State University of New York, Buffalo wrestling team (4-3, 0-0 MAC) finished off the Northeast Duals with a 1-2 overall record. The Bulls defeated Sacred Heart for the second straight season before falling to Wyoming and Rutgers in the afternoon. UB has now surpassed their 2013-14 win total with four wins on the season.
"We wrestled well today," stated second-year head coach John Stutzman. " We are growing daily. The results are not what we wanted but we are battling hard and putting ourselves in positions to succeed."
The Bulls had their best result of the day in their very first match as they were able to dominate Sacred Heart, downing them 32-12. Senior captain Max Soria continued his great wrestling for the Bulls as he earned a fall victory over Tim Johnson in 1:06 to earn his team six points. Freshman Sean Peacock was the next Bull to earn a win by fall as he dominated his opponent at 133-pounds. Junior Tony Lock earned a win by fall while Justin Cooksey and Joe Ariola won by major decision in their matches.
In the second match of the day, the Bulls did not get the result they were hoping for against a very good Wyoming team as they were defeated 43-0. The match was a lot closer than the score stated as the Bulls lost six matches by decision including four matches that were decided by two points or less and two matches in overtime. Soria had a battle in one of the most entertaining matches of the afternoon against #10 Tyler Cox, as the King Park, NY native was defeated by the score of 19-17. Soria and Cox went back and forth all match long with the nationally ranked Cox earning the victory in the overtime period with a takedown.
The Bulls were not able to earn a winning record on the day in their third and final match as they were defeated by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights by the score of 27-9. Nationally ranked Soria earned the Bulls three points in the opening match as he downed Josh Patrick by decision, 3-1. Soria finished 2-1 on the day and now has a record of 13-1 on the season. Rrok Ndokaj also earned the Bulls three points as he defeated Ethan Orr by decision, 7-5, at 165-pounds. Ariola won at 197-pounds by the score of 7-4 to give him a 2-1 record on the day and an overall mark of 10-5 in his redshirt freshman campaign.
"As a group we are continuing to get better and next up is a tough Kent State team," said Stutzman. "We need to be ready and have a great week of preparation as we enter the tough MAC schedule."
Next up for the Bulls is Kent State on Saturday, December 6 at 7:00 pm at Alumni Arena. The match will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app.
