#9 Northern Iowa Downs Bulls In Home Opener, 32-6

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team (1-6, 0-3 MAC) was downed on Saturday afternoon in their home opening dual by the #9 Northern Iowa Panthers (4-0, 2-0 MAC) by the score of 28-6.
The Bulls were able to put together back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 as Tony Lock and Angelo Malvestuto each won by decision.
Lock continued to impress in his second year in the blue and white as he dominated Kyle Lux, earning a 9-4 victory after compiling 2:40 of riding time to garner the extra point. Lock started out the match quick, earning a takedown and a near fall to take the 5-1 lead into the second period. After Lux clawed his way back into the match trailing only 5-4, Lock closed the door in the final period earning a takedown and an escape en rout to his team leading 12th win of the season.
Malvestuto willed his way to his third dual meet win of the season over Basil Minto by the score of 7-4, despite losing the riding time point. The two grapplers went back and forth in the opening period as Minto held the slim 2-1 advantage. In the second period, Malvestuto was awarded a point as Minto got called for stalling, giving the redshirt junior life heading into the final period. In the final period, Malvestuto was awarded three more penalty points and also had a nice reversal to pick up his 11th win overall on the year.
The Bulls dropped the first seven matches of the day as the Panthers had their four ranked grapplers handle the Bulls in easy fashion. Nick Flannery showed some fight at 141 against Levi Wolfensperger but he was outscored 3-2 in the final period and his opponent was awarded the riding time point en rout to the 6-4 victory.
The Bulls will return to the mat on Sunday, January 12 as they will head to Pittsburgh, PA for the University of Pittsburgh Duals.
