
UB Wrestling Wraps Up Action At The Pittsburgh Duals

PITTSBURGH, PA - The University at Buffalo wrestling team (2-9, 0-3 MAC) wrapped up action at the Pittsburgh duals on Sunday afternoon with a 1-3 record. The Bulls downed Seton Hill and lost to North Carolina, #10 Pittsburgh and Duke.
The Bulls got a great effort all afternoon long from Mike Soria at 125 pounds. Soria finished the afternoon with a 2-1 overall record including a big win over #10 Nathanial Kraisser of North Carolina, downing him 9-5 in the first match of the afternoon. Soria received a victory over Seton Hill by forfeit before giving way to his twin brother Max Soria against Duke. Max dominated in his first match back from injury, earning a major decision over his opponent, 13-4.
Wally Maziarz and Angelo Malvestuto got back on track for the Bulls at 157 and 197 pounds respectively as each grappler compiled a 3-1 record on the afternoon. Maziarz picked up his first win of the day against North Carolina as he shut out his opponent by the score of 3-0. Next time out, Maziarz controlled the match, downing Zach Voytek of Seton Hill by the score of 8-5. In his final match, Maziarz won a close match by the score of 2-1. Malvestuto won his first three matches of the day, downing Frank Abbandanza of North Carolina by the score of 7-2 and winning by technical fall over Morris Lawson of Seton Hill, 18-3. The next match, Malvestuto picked up the victory by forfeit.

In the first match of the day, Buffalo put in a solid effort against a very talented North Carolina squad but they were upended 26-12. Soria picked up a win over a nationally ranked opponent and Malvestuto dominated at 197 pounds. Other Bulls picking up victories were Maziarz and James Benjamin at 285 pounds.
Buffalo dominated their next match over Seton Hill, earning their first shutout victory of the season, 38-0. Tony Lock picked up his first victory of the day as he pinned his opponent just 2:45 into the match. Benjamin won his second straight match by pin as well at 1:53. Justin Farmer, Ryan Todora, Tyler Rill and Rrok Ndokaj each earned their first wins of the day to propel the Bulls to their second win on the year.
Buffalo dominated their next match over Seton Hill, earning their first shutout victory of the season, 38-0. Tony Lock picked up his first victory of the day as he pinned his opponent just 2:45 into the match. Benjamin won his second straight match by pin as well at 1:53. The Bulls struggled in their third match against the 10th best team in the country, the Pittsburgh Panthers, falling 40-6. The Bulls lone victory came at 197 pounds as Malvestuto was awarded the win by forfeit.
The Bulls almost pulled to an even 2-2 in the final match against Duke but they were denied by the score of 19-13. Buffalo had victories from Soria, Nick Flannery, Maziarz and Lock. Needing a victory in the last match of the day at 285 pounds, Benjamin could not come up with the big win for Buffalo, falling by the score of 7-3.
UB will return to the mat on Friday, January 17 as they will take on Columbia. First match is set for 7:00 pm.
