NEW YORK, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team (2-10, 0-3 MAC) was denied a victory on Friday night at Columbia. The Bulls were defeated by the score of 24-9 by the Lions as John Stutzman was denied his 100th career victory as a head coach at the Division I level.
"We're fighting out there on the mat," stated Stutzman. "We are getting better every time out. Tonight we received big wins from (Max) Soria and (Nick) Flannery against two NCAA qualifiers from last season."
Returning to the mat and looking to be back at 100 percent, Max Soria started the match for the Bulls with the dominant 4-0 victory over Penn Gottfried. Soria earned payback for an earlier dual loss at the hands of Gottfried early on in the season. With the win, Soria improves to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in dual meets.
Nick Flannery gave the Bulls the early 6-3 lead after arguably his best match of the season, defeating #17 Matt Brystol by the score of 6-2. Flannery picked up his first victory of the season over a ranked opponent and avenged a loss to Brystol earlier in the season.
The Bulls were not able to pick up any points in the next five matches as Tyler Rill and Ryan Therrien were both downed by nationally ranked opponents at 165 and 174 pounds respectively. Tony Lock was not able to pick up his team-leading 15th victory of the season against Zack Hernandez as he fell late in the third period by the score of 4-2.
The final three points of the dual for the Bulls were collected by redshirt junior Angelo Malvestuto at 197 pounds. Malvestuto outlasted Matt Idelson, 8-7, in a very physically demanding match to pick up his team-high 15th victory on the season. Malvestuto now has a 9-3 dual meet record at 197 pounds including winning four of his last five matches.
For the dual, the Lions held the slight advantage in takedowns, 10-7, and escapes, 9-7. The Bulls earned 27 points for the match while the home team recorded 43 in their third win of the season.
The Bulls will return home for two conference duals at Alumni Arena. The first dual will be on Saturday, Jan. 25 against Old Dominion at 7:00 pm and the second dual will be on Sunday, Jan. 26 against Ohio at 1:00 pm.
