Buffalo Wrestling Drops Home Dual to #23 Old Dominion, 21-10

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team (2-11, 0-4 MAC) was defeated on Saturday night in front of the home crowd at Alumni Arena by #23 Old Dominion (4-8, 1-2 MAC) by the score of 21-10.
Three Bulls were able to pick up victories on the night, Mike Soria at 125, Nick Flannery at 141 and Tyler Rill at 165.
Soria started off the night for the Bulls with an emphatic major decision victory over Buddy Scarborough by the score of 13-5. Soria started out slow as he fell behind 2-1 after the first period but in the second period he took the match over. Soria picked up four points in the second to take the 5-2 lead into the third. In the third, Soria got the fans to their feet as he recorded two takedowns and a near fall two to take control of the match. As the final whistle blew, Soria took the riding time point and downed his opponent 13-5.
After Justin Farmer was defeated at 133 to make the match 4-3 in favor of the Bulls, Nick Flannery took the mat for his biggest victory of the season. Flannery downed #4 Chris Mecate by the score of 12-7 to take home his second straight victory over a ranked opponent.
Flannery fell behind 4-2 after the first period but he didn't flinch in the second, as he was able to earn a takedown and a near fall three, which brought his teammates and crowd to their feet. Entering the third period with the 7-5 lead, Flannery put the match away with a late takedown and the riding time point to earn his 14th win of the season.
After back-to-back losses by the Bulls made the score 9-7 in favor of the Monarchs, Tyler Rill stepped onto the mat wrestled a great match. Rill outlasted Devin Geoghegan of Old Dominion by the score of 3-2 as he earned the winning takedown in the final period. The win for Rill was his first against a MAC opponent and his 12th of the season for Buffalo.
The Rill win was the final victory of the night for the Bulls as they dropped the final four matches. Tony Lock had a tight battle with Jack Dechow that went to overtime but the Monarchs picked up the 3-1 sudden victory after a nice takedown.
The Bulls will host conference foe Ohio tomorrow at Alumni Arena at 1:00 pm.
