UB Wrestling Falls At Home To Ohio, 34-6

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team (2-12, 0-5 MAC) was upended by the Ohio Bobcats (8-2, 4-2 MAC) on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena by the score of 34-6.
The Bulls continued to get great effort from their grapplers at 184 and 197 pounds as Tony Lock and Angelo Malvestuto both picked up victories in back-to-back matches for Buffalo.
Going winless through the first seven matches of the afternoon, the Bulls needed a energy boost and they got that from Lock at 184 pounds. Lock and Ryan Garringer went scorless after the first period but in the second Lock started to take over. Starting on bottom, Lock earned a revesal and a near fall three to take the 5-2 lead after two periods. Lock stayed smart in the final period and wore down his opponent to pick up the three points for his team.
Following Lock's victory, Malvestuto stepped on the mat looking to gain back some confidence following a loss to Old Dominion on Saturday night. Malvestuto and Michael Duckworth went back and forth in the opening period as it ended with the score tied at three. After a scorless second period, Malvestuto took over in the final frame as he earned a reversal and a near fall two to put the match away. He was also awarded the riding time point en route to the 8-3 victory. The win for Malvestuto was his team leading 16th win on the season.
In the final match of the afternoon, James Benjamin put in a great effort against #11 Jeremy Johnson of Ohio. Benjamin hung tough through the first two periods of the match as he trailed by the slim margin of 2-1 but the more experience Johnson pulled away in the last period and downed the freshman 9-4 after earning the riding time point.
The Bulls will return to the mat on Saturday, February 1 as they travel to take on nationally ranked Edinboro.
