Bulls Drop Marathon Heartbreaker To Western Michigan

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - In a match that lasted well over four hours, the University at Buffalo women's tennis team fell to Western Michigan, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center. The two teams split the six singles matches, but the Broncos came back to win the early doubles point.
In doubles, UB was able to win at first doubles as Miranda Podlas and Gopika Kapoor won their match, 8-5, the second straight victory for the pair. The Bulls had a 6-3 lead at third doubles, but the Broncos were able to win five straight games to win the match. Western Michigan also picked up a close 9-7 victory at second doubles to claim the doubles point, which would be the difference in the match.
In singles, the two teams split the six contests with WMU winning at one, two and three, while UB won at four, five and six. The first point came at first singles where the Bulls were forced to retire due to injury. Kapoor put the Bulls on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at fifth singles, while the Broncos won at second singles to go up 3-1 in the match. Sophomore Laura Fernandez then won 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at fourth singles, while Anamaria Candanoza came back at sixth singles to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, tying the match up at 3-3.
The contest came down to third singles where a pair of seniors would decide the contest. UB's Tamara Markovic won the first set 7-5, but then dropped the second set 6-4. Western Michigan's Jill Pastunink took the third and deciding set, 6-1, to clinch the match for the Broncos.
The Bulls remain home tomorrow afternoon when they host Bowling Green at 1:00 pm.
