Bulls Roll to Impressive Marks at Big Red Invitational

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field teams competed at the Big Red Invitational at Cornell University on Sunday. The Bulls won 14 events in the non-scoring meet.
UB's throwers were impressive on Sunday, sweeping victories in the men's and women's shot put, hammer and discus and also claiming the men's javelin competition. Shante' White was a double-winner for the UB women. White took the women's hammer throw at 181-10 (55.43m) and the women's discus at 161-4 (49.17m), winning the competition by 20 feet. Evan Palmer waa a double-winner for the men as he also won the hammer and discus competitions. Palmer had a top hammer throw of 191-8 (58.42m) and won the discus at 160-0 (48.78m).
Kristy Woods led the Bulls to the top three spots in winning the women's shot put. Woods had a top throw of 49-5.75 (15.08m) with Erin Miller second at 46-4.75 (14.14m) and Rachel Roberts third at 43-1 (13.13m). Miller and Woods were also second to White in the hammer. Jonathan Jones won the men's shot put title with a top throw of 58-2 (17.73m).
Jacob Sunday and Casey Garbaty claimed the top two finishes in the men's javelin. Sunday won the competition with a top throw of 199-4 (60.75m) while Garbaty was second at 190-9 (58.15m). Also earning a victory in the field events was Kelly Truppo in the women's pole vault as she established a new season-best height of 12-6.25 (3.82m).
Chris Reape extended his school record in the men's high jump as he finished second with a height of 7-0.25. The new height added 1.25 inches to Reape's previous best, set two weeks ago at the Upstate Challenge. Austin Ashby established the team's best long jump of the season as he placed third with a leap of 24-5.50 (7.45m). Ashby added more than two feet from his previous best performance and his leap is more than a foot better than any other men's long jump this season.
On the track, the Bulls claimed five races, including three relay races. Crystal Graham won the women's 400-meters with a season-best time of 55.74 seconds while Katie Sanders lowered her season-best time in winning the women's 3,000-meters in 10:01.56. Graham also was part of both winning relays for the UB women. She anchored the 4x100-meter relay to a 45.94 finish as she was preceeded by Jamiee McClary, Malayah White and Brooklynn Ventura. Graham was first with the baton for the victorioius 4x400-meter relay team as the she was followed by Donna Jeanty, Camaria Long and McClary to a 3:57.18 finish. The UB men had a victory in the 4x100-meter relay as the team of Darien Johnson, Ryan Billian, Micah Oliver and Miles Lewis lowered their season best to 40.83. UB's 4x400-meter relay team of Will Cole, Doug Hannon, Charlie Bascom and Brian Cummiskey finished second in its race in 3:18.17. Billian also won the men's 200-meters in 21.70 and took third in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 14.17.
Jeanty also finished second in the women's 400-meter hurdles as she lowered her season best to 1:01.35. Regine Lazard was third in the race in a season-best of 1:01.55. Chrissy Clarkin was second in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:57.12. For the UB men, Brian Crimmins finished second in the 800-meters in 1:52.98 and Cole was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.45.
The Bulls travel to the Penn State Jim Thorpe Open on Friday, May 3.
