MUNCIE, IN - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team hung tight with the defending Mid-American Conference champions on Friday afternoon, but Akron defeated the Bulls in the MAC Quarterfinals, 4-1, ending UB's season at 13-5.
The Zips took the doubles point winning at first and second doubles, but not after a fight from the Bulls that last nearly an hour and fifteen minutes. The first doubles match finished at 9-7, while the second doubles was won at 8-6. The match at third doubles was tied at 6-6 when it was stopped.
In singles action, junior Anamaria Candanoza won her contest at sixth singles in record timing, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The match was briefly tied at 1-1 when the Zips took a 2-1 advantage following a victory at second singles. Akron then went on to win at third and fourth singles to clinch the match.
When play was stopped, UB had the lead at first singles as junior Tanvi Shah overcame an early 4-1 deficit to take the first set and then after dropping the second, was up 3-1 in the third. Sophomore Laura Fernandez, who lost the first set at fifth singles, was up 5-2 in the second and was close to forcing a third set.
The loss caps off a season that saw UB win 13 matches, its most since 2008-09 and have a 10-match winning streak to start the season, amongst the longest in the nation. The Bulls graduate just one senior from this year's team in Tamara Markovic.
