Bulls Keep Tournament Hopes Alive With 4-3 Win At EMU

YPSILANTI, MI - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team won four of the six singles matches this afternoon at Eastern Michigan, defeating the Eagles, 4-3, at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti, MI. The victory keep UB's MAC Tournament hopes alive heading into the final regular season match tomorrow at Toledo.
The host Eagles swept the doubles competition, winning all three matches and taking a 1-0 lead in the match. However, UB proved to be a different team in singles action beginning with an easy victory at first singles where junior Tanvi Shah won, 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match up. After a win at sixth singles from Eastern Michigan, the Bulls claimed the next three matches to clinch the victory. Junior Miranda Podlas won at second singles, 7-5, 6-4, while the final three matches all went three sets.
Sophomore Laura Fernandez gave UB a 3-1 lead with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 win at fifth singles, while freshman Gopika Kapoor clinched it with a big win at third singles. She swept the first set, 6-0, and after losing the second set, she came back and won the third in a tiebreaker, 8-6. The Eagles won the last match at fourth singles.
"It was a great battle and I just think we were able to fight a little harder, especially in singles," said head coach Kristen Ortman. "It was a phenomenal win and it was exciting to see the way Gopika was able to come through in her match."
A victory by Buffalo tomorrow at Toledo will clinch them a spot in the 2013 MAC Tournament. The contest with the Rockets begins at 1:00 pm.
