Speckman Tosses Another Shutout As Bulls Top Toledo

TOLEDO, OH - Junior Tori Speckman recorded her third straight complete-game shutout on Saturday afternoon as the University at Buffalo softball team defeated Toledo, 1-0, for its sixth victory in its last seven games. The victory improves Buffalo to 12-23 on the year and 5-6 in conference play.
Both Speckman and Toledo pitcher Marla Gooding were on point this afternoon as they allowed just four hits between the two of them. More impressive is that they did so in freezing temperatures. While Toledo allowed just one hit, the Bulls were able to squeeze out a run in the top of the third, taking advantage of a Toledo error. Sophomore Karly Nevez recorded the lone hit, which was a one-out double to left field and she came in to score as the Toledo second baseman misplayed the ball during the next at bat.
That was all the support that Speckman would need as she retired the first 13 Toledo batters, taking a perfect game into the fifth inning. A single and a Buffalo error put runners on the corners with two outs in the inning, but Speckman got the final out on a strike out. The Rockets picked up a hit in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Speckman recorded her fifth strikeout to end the game.
Speckman picked up her seventh win of the year and has now gone 21 straight innings without allowing a run. In her last 32.1 innings, she has given up just two earned runs.
"Tori was outstanding again today and we have been fortunate to steal a couple victories these last two days because of her, but we have to do a better job at the plate," said head coach Jen Teague. "That being said, winning six of our last seven games, all on the road, shows the improvement we continue to make each and every day."
The Bulls will face Toledo once more tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
