BUFFALO, NY – Three University at Buffalo track and field standouts have been named as Mid-American Conference Athletes of the Week. The league announced its awards from its Cleveland headquarters this morning.
After impressive performances at the season-opening Wake Forest Open on March 16, sprinter Miles Lewis was selected as the league's Men's Track Athlete of the Week while thrower Jacob Sunday was named Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Multi-events athlete Emma Siuciak earned the league's Women's Field Athlete of the Week award.
Lewis won a pair of sprint events for the UB men at the Wake Forest meet, including breaking the 100-meter dash mark. Lewis took the 100-meter dash in 10.37 seconds, lowering his school mark of 10.48 set last season. He then followed with a win in the 200-meters in 21.30 seconds. Lewis's 100-meter time ranks sixth in the nation.
Sunday finished third in the men's javelin at Wake Forest with a throw of 222-11 (67.96m). The throw ranks ninth in the nation and was 14 feet better than his 2012 season best which he set at last year's Penn Relays.
Siuciak participated in five events at Wake Forest. She set a new UB and Kentner Stadium record with her victory in the high jump. Siuciak cleared 6-0 (1.83m) to take the title and break Shelly Hamilton's 1999 UB mark of 5-11.25 (1.81m). Siuciak's height is currently tied as the best in the country.
Women's head coach Vicki Mitchell commented on Siuciak's performance. "After missing the indoor season with an injury from the fall, Emma has started off the outdoor season with a tremendous showing. Her mark of 6-0 is simply exceptional and is a reflection of both her hard work and that of [assistant] coach [Steve] Esler. We are excited for the season," said Mitchell.
The Bulls are next in action at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge on March 29-30.
