BOCA RATON, FL – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team opened its weekend in South Florida with a 4-3 loss at Florida Atlantic on Friday afternoon at the Patch Reef Tennis Center.
The Bulls (6-5) scored three singles wins over the homestanding Owls (5-9). At first singles, Vusa Hove rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jose Fantova. Pablo Alvarez, at fourth singles, also had an easy straight sets win over Sean Bacha, 6-1, 6-2. Damien David, at second singles, needed three sets to dispose of Will Neuner. David won the first and third sets by identical 7-5 scores after dropping the second set, 6-3.
UB also picked up a doubles win from Hove and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik over Bacha and Richard Meade in the number three contest, 9-8.
"This was a brutally tough match. Credit to FAU for playing well and winning that match," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "I am very proud of how much our guys are improving and the way Vusa, Damien and Pablo stepped up in singles. We need to find a way to get over our nervousness in tight situations to win a match like this. We have a tough turn around tomorrow with Lynn but it is a great opportunity to practice what we saw today."
The Bulls conclude the weekend on Saturday morning against Lynn University, ranked number three in the country among Division II programs.
