WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team remained unbeaten for the dual meet season with a 6-1 victory over visiting Temple on Saturday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls improved to 5-0 while Temple slipped to 1-7 for the season.
The Bulls needed a rally in doubles play to clinch the opening point. After each squad split the number one and two matches, the number three team of Marta Stoyanova and Laura Fernandez scored the clinching in convincing fashion. Trailing 5-2, the UB tandem rolled to wins in six of the next seven games for the 8-6 decision over Maame Ama Osei and Mirnami Okajima. Stoyanova closed out the final game with an ace on match point to provide the exclamation mark.
In singles play, Miranda Podlas, at number two, Tamara Markovic, at number four, and Anamaria Candanoza, at number five, all won in straight sets. Podlas needed a second-set tiebreaker over Alicia Doms for her win, while Markovic defeated Jordan Batey, 7-5, 7-5.
Tanvi Shah, at number one, clinched the fourth and deciding point for the Bulls as she won a three-set match over Yana Mavrina, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. Gopika Kapoor, at number six, won a super-tiebreaker, 10-4, over Osei for a comeback win after splitting the first two sets.
Head coach Kristen Ortman was pleased with her team's performance on Saturday. "They know how to get the job done. They know how to win and execute, which is awesome."
The Bulls have little time for recovery. They host Binghamton tomorrow at 1:00 pm at the Miller Tennis Center.
