ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at Ivy League opponent Cornell at the Reis Tennis Center Sunday afternoon to even the team's record to 2-2 for the spring season.
The Bulls had their chances on Sunday. In doubles play, the top UB duo of Damien David and Akhil Mehta lost in a tiebreaker, 8-7, to Venkat Iyer and Alex Sidney.
Two singles matches went to deciding third sets but the Bulls were unable to triumph. At first singles, Vusa Hove and Iyer split tiebreakers in the opening two sets, but Iyer took the third set and the match, 6-2. Mehta lost a third-set tiebreaker at number six to Kyle Berman as the pair split 6-4 decisions in the opening two sets.
Cornell, ranked 73 in the nation, improved to 4-1.
"Even though we lost 7-0 today there was a marked improvement with our attitudes and we played better as a team. Cornell is ranked for a reason, and it is a great learning experience for us as we get ready for Cleveland State," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "We had chances at one and six to win and first doubles had match points. It's our goal to do a better job of converting when we have these opportunities."
The Bulls travel to Horizon League member Cleveland State next Sunday.
